Smoke ‘Em Out!
Now that is one of my favorite Bush-isms. OK, I like his references to the Internets too. And his definition of Sovreign… I could just keep going on and on. Sorry Bush fans… or should I say fan? HA! Anyway… sorry if I offend anyone, but it really was a good title for my cedar smoked salmon. I smoked ‘em out all right, but this was in my grill.
I’ve been wanting to make cedar plank salmon ever since I had it at a restaurant a few years ago. I saw cedar grilling planks for sale at my local Publix, and first cringed at the price… $9 for two planks. Sheesh, its just wood. A bit pricey, but when I saw that you could use them a few times, I threw my frugal caution to the wind and bought them. Boy was I glad I did! This made such a fantastic dinner, and I did basically NO work for it, as I used my basic orange juice glaze. That is a total win-win situation for me.

Cedar Plank Salmon Recipe
1 cedar plank
1/4 c orange juice
1 tbsp honey
2 salmon filets
salt
pepper
1. Soak planks for at least an hour, preferably longer. Preheat grill and place the plank inside the grill, rough side down. Let heat for about 10 minutes until smoking.
2. Simmer the orange juice and honey in a small sauce pan, just until thickened slightly, about 2 minutes, and let cool down. Or, you can microwave it in a ramekin for 1-2 minutes (if you’re feeling lazy and don’t want to dirty a pan)
3. Season the salmon with salt and pepper on both sides. Brush both sides with glaze and place on the cedar plank. Grill until cooked, 10-15 minutes. No need to flip the fish.

LOL Internets. As to the salmon, beautiful as usual Candance. I always find salmon a bit too cloying, but in small portions, delish!
I need to break down and make salmon that way…looks wonderful. And like you said…less work. Sounds good to me.
I, too, have cringed at the price of the wood, and that’s why I’ve never bought them. But you’ve just inspired me!
One way to get the boards cheaper are to go to Home Depot, Lowes, etc and get a 1X10 cedar board, cut into 12-15″ sections. They’re much cheaper than buying the special boards and do at least as well.
Thanks for the advice Curt! I’ll definitely do that next time I smoke em out!
Candace, it was nice to meet you and Stephan in person the other day… as for your food, mouthwatering as usual. Love salmon too.. which reminds me, i got one cedar plank left. they are not cheap at all!
Wow! This looks so delicious! And so simple! I must admit, I have been a little reluctant to buy thecedar plansk in the store too. I can never justify paying so much for wood. But now… now I’ll have to try. You dinner just looks too good! Thanks for sharing!
I love those cedar planks! Besides fish, I use them for making baked brie, goat cheese, etc.. Very yum!
I’ve bought these for my dad before and he loved them. Thanks for reminding me to get some. The salmon looks delicous.
Salmon can be really bland but not this one! And I love how you served and plated it. YUM!
This looks simple and awesome. Boy do I miss Publix. And you too!
$9 for multi use isn’t bad at all. William Sonoma has a set of 4 for $14.95 but they are only single use. Looks yummy! My fish always sticks to the planks and then falls apart. Any non-stick tips?
It’s dinner time here, and I want to eat the screen - that salmon looks so good! I don\’t think I can get the cedar wood around here but it must be very nice.
Man, the Bush fans are going to go nucular on you! Ha!
The caramelization on the salmon looks amazing. I love the picture with the flame on the plank.
This looks amazingly mouth-watering:) I should get the grill going:)
